You might say that this is a pretty average car for a pretty average price, and it is. Until you take a look under the bonnet.

Yup, whatever engine this fucker had when it was new got replaced by a Mercedes-Benz OM617 Diesel mated to some sort of automatic transmission.
Question is, does its newfound non-turbo Mercedes diesel performance fit this huge great big slab of Arlington, TX steel?

Why would they put such a poor engine in it when the Olds diesel would have fit?

My parents had one of those while I was growing up. Tan with tan vinyl seats. I hated riding in that car. Curiously, I still like wagons though.
That engine does not help this one at all. Not that the V8 they came with actually had much power for a 4,000 pound land-yacht like that anyway, but that diesel is far worse.
If one can add a turbo easily, then maybe it's worth it. Otherwise CP at any price.

Obviously to improve weight distribution.

WTF?

I’d imagine the number of Olds diesels in Lithuania is much less than old Mercedes engines.

Swap to the turbo version is very easy. The engine is close to identical.

While I appreciate the mish-mash engine swap, I have to assume that this thing is slower than a UPS truck. Like, much, much slower. Like a UPS truck towing a 500lb boat anchor slow. If you're going to go through the trouble of the swap, why not swap something in that at least makes the car fun if not usable in traffic?

My turgid and unabashed love for B-body wagons overrides the disappointment of the Merc diesel
